NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2008 H. BUNNELL, Manager 487-0120
BOARD NOTES
The Center's Insurance Carrier has now waived the prohibition on
consumption of alcoholic beverages. Therefore, the presence of a
bartender will no longer be required at Center functions. However, the
Board decided to reestablish procedures relative to the consumption of
liquor while on Center property. Accordingly, the following Rule was
adopted by the Board at its October 15, 2008 regular meeting. The
procedures set out in this rule are the same as those that existed prior to
2001 when the stringent restrictions imposed by the insurance carrier were
required to be adopted.
“No alcoholic beverages are allowed to be brought in, served
or consumed on Community Center premises unless approved
for an event by the Manager or the Board of Directors. The
person or persons in charge of the event shall submit a written
request for approval to the Manager. The Manager or the Board
of Directors may revoke approval at any time. All approvals and
disapprovals must be in writing. All Members and Guests must
comply with the liquor regulations of the State of California. It
is the responsibility of the Member and/or Guest to us alcohol
in a safe manner. The person or persons in charge of the event
shall ask any person found to be consuming alcohol in an
unsafe manner to leave the premises and shall submit to the
Manager the name of each person asked to leave and a
summary of their conduct. The consumption of alcohol is at the
Members and Guests own risk.”
The Board of Directors also approved at their October 15, 2008 Regular
Meeting the following Rule with regard to guest passes:
“A Member will be allowed 48 guest usages per year (7/1 to
6/30) at no charge. The Manager may grant at her discretion, 6
additional guest passes, upon request, for house guests or
family members only. Any guests in excess of 54 per year must
have prior approval of the Board of Directors.”
WANTED
VOLUNTEERS FOR “ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE”
We need 2 or 3 people to develop new activities and determine if there
is sufficient interest and support among our residents, and bring a
fresh approach to finding new activities, crafts, games, etc. Your
Board will assist you. Previous examples are badminton, bocci ball,
horseshoes and shuffleboard, but adequate support/interest did not
occur. We have many new residents - find out what can be done.
Help make life in Oaks North even more fun!
If you’re interested in volunteering, give your name to Gail in the office
and you will be contacted by a Board member.

I C E
(In Case of Emergency)
A campaign encouraging people to enter an emergency contact
number in their mobile (cell) phone's memory under the heading
"ICE" (i.e. In Case of Emergency), has rapidly spread throughout the
world as a particular consequence of the terrorist attacks in London.
Originally established as a nation-wide campaign in the United
Kingdom, ICE allows paramedics or police to be able to contact a
designated relative or next-of-kin in an emergency situation. The
idea is the brainchild of East Anglian Ambulance Service paramedic
Bob Brotchie and was launched in May of this year. Bob, 41, who has
been a paramedic for 13 years, said:
"I was reflecting on some of the calls I've attended at the
roadside where I had to look through the mobile phone contacts
struggling for information on a shocked or injured person.
Almost everyone carries a mobile phone now, and with ICE we'd
know immediately who to contact and what number to call. The
person may even know their medical history."
By adopting the ICE advice, your mobile (cell) phone will help the
rescue services quickly contact a friend or relative - which could be
vital in a life or death situation. It only takes a few seconds to do,
and it could easily help save your life. Why not put ICE in your phone
now? Simply select a new contact in your phone book, enter the word
'ICE' and the number of the person you wish to be contacted.
In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be
able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to
contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. For more than
one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc It really could save your life,
or put a loved one's mind at rest.
Editor’s Note: Most newer regular phones, whether corded or
cordless have speed dial numbers which are listed either on the
phone unit itself or in an internal directory. Listing ICE numbers in
these as well could be helpful, especially if you live alone.

WEST NILE VIRUS - FIGHT THE BITE!
How do people get West Nile virus? Mosquitoes become infected with
West Nile virus by biting an infected bird. When these mosquitoes then
bite a human, the human contract the virus. West Nile virus is not
spread by person-to-person contact. The peak season for West Nile
virus is from August to October.
Who is at the highest risk for West Nile Virus?
All residents of areas
where the virus has been identified are at risk of getting West Nile Virus.
Persons over 50 years of age and those with compromised immune
systems are the highest at risk for developing serious complications.
What are the symptoms? Approximately 80% of people infected with
the virus experience no symptoms. The remaining 20% will display
symptoms which can include fever, headache, body aches nausea,
vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the
chest, stomach, and back. Symptoms can last from a few days to
several weeks. One in 150 will develop severe illness. Severe
symptoms can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor
disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision
loss, numbness and paralysis. Serious symptoms may lead to long-term
illness or death.
What precautions can I take to prevent mosquito bites?
When
outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk, wear long pants and
long-sleeved, light colored shirts. Insect repellent containing DEET
effectively repels mosquitoes. You can also prevent mosquito bites by
preventing breeding. Mosquitos breed in standing water sources, such
as plant saucers, spare tires, birdbaths and decorative ponds. Removing
these types of standing water sources from your property will
stop mosquitoes from breeding. If you have standing water sources on
your property, drain them, or stock them with mosquito-eating fish or
“mosquito donuts.”

A SPECIAL POEM FOR SENIOR CITIZENS!!
A row of bottles on my shelf
Caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
Goes to my heart so it won't stop.
A little white one that I take
Goes to my hands so they won't shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
and tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
Or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all
Go to my blood so I won't fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright
Prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I'd really like to know.......
Is what tells each one
